The Spanish investment of this Spanish-Italian co-production corresponds to the Madrid company Alquimia Cinema, who also co-produced the film ‘Passionate’ (2002), partially filmed in Ibiza. However, ‘Amnesia’ was filmed entirely on the island, with the exception of some footage of the area of Cap de Barbaria, Formentera.
‘Amnesia’ was filmed between September 11 and November 26, 2001. Of Ibiza Island we can see images of Ses Salines, Platja d’en Bossa, the airport, the Marina district, Teatro Pereyra bar (where artist Macaco shot a video clip for her song which is part of the soundtrack of the movie), the sports center Es Raspallar (whose administrative area was transformed into a police station), several interiors of houses of the inlands and the club Amnesia, whose name appears on the title of the film.
Winner of an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for ‘Mediterraneo’ (1991), the Italian director Gabriele Salvatores said the idea of ’Amnesia’ arose from a funeral he attended on the island: “The ceremony was for an Argentine hippie who had come to Ibiza to flee from the military coup. He opened a bar that was very successful but in the end, since he was not interested in the money, he decided to hand it to a friend in exchange for a Norton Commando motorcycle. After getting on his bike and hitting the road he had an accident and died. I was impressed how a gift had become a cause of death. ” After filming ‘Ammnesia’ Salvatores bought a house in Ibiza, where he has written the screenplays for some of his films.
